For 2021 denim designers are drawing on the full range of possibilities. Whether loose fits, high waist, inspired by workwear, 80s vintage looks or unbleached white shades, the denim trends for next year are diverse and cannot be squeezed into ready-made patterns. However, one topic is gaining momentum. Sustainability will become even more important. Be it in the production of denim or during the design process. Patch and repair, reworked denim and making use of deadstock will become a common feature. We talked to denim designers and experts about their denim visions for the coming seasons.

“While skinny fits will not disappear from the scene, the trend toward wide silhouettes continues: In 2021, the emphasis lies on loose fit silhouettes, O-shapes and tapered to flared leg shapes. The color palette has modern elements but is equally classic and timeless: Tones such as natural and unbleached white, sand and stone.”

“2021 signifies the convergence of heritage and advancement, as we take inspiration from classic favorites while enhancing new and existing styles with added comfort and performance. We’ll introduce new men’s and women’s heritage fit portfolios based on our original jean styles. The chino is a key fit trend inspired by original workwear from Casey Jones Co.–acquired by Wrangler’s predecessor company, Blue Bell, in 1943.”

“For washes, the vintage look sets the tone. The ’80's are back with a salt and pepper look, light acid washes and a used look with bumped edges or fringed hems. The trend is going back to comfort stretch with very little elastane and even rigid denim, without any elastane at all.”

I believe in 2021 we’ll also see more progress on the sustainability front. Patch and repair, reworked denim and making use of deadstock will become a common feature as we all work to reduce our resource consumption in the pursuit of crafting incredible denim and doing our part in creating a more just and equitable world.”

“In summer 2021 Goldgarn Denim presents next to their all-time favorites a new bundle of seasonal cuts and colors, especially for women. Trendy loose but feminine styles like the ‘paperbag trouser’ or ‘slouchy trouser’ will arise in different summer washes and colors like nature-white, light-blue and lilac.”

Higher waists for men are key as well as 3D sculpted silhouettes for both men and women. There is a focus on wide(r) fits and long(er) leg lengths.”
