From 5 to 9 July, Frankfurt Fashion Week will take place for the first time. In a joint digital press conference, the organizers, the City of Frankfurt, Messe Frankfurt and Premium Exhibitions, provided further details about the new fashion event around the Neonyt, Premium and Seek trade fairs. To begin with: It is about nothing less than the future of the fashion industry.
Leading event for sustainability
The issue of sustainability is the top priority. This was emphasised by Detlef Braun, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt: "We want to find solutions for macroeconomic problems. It is about what the fashion and textile industry will look like in the future and how it can be changed. To achieve this, politics and industry must exchange ideas and work together".
In order to underline this aspect and the claim to create a sustainable event, the partnership with the UN was announced, or more precisely: the Conscious Fashion Campaign (CFC), which cooperates with the United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP), is acting as the presenting partner.
The focus is, among other things, on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 17 goals for sustainable development to be achieved by 2030 and set by the members of the United Nations in 2015: "The fashion industry must become climate neutral by 2050. And we call on all our exhibitors to commit to achieving the SDGs by 2023," Braun said.
All trade fairs, events, runway shows and conferences during Frankfurt Fashion Week should reflect the major theme of sustainability, which is unique in this form, Braun said. The trade fair boss also announced the presentation of a Sustainable Fashion Award "with international appeal".
In addition, the Frankfurt Fashion SDG Summit presented by Conscious Fashion Campaign will be held on July 8, a large-scale summit on the topic of SDGs and green development.
Consumer Events
In addition to the well-known Neonyt, Premium and Seek trade fairs, Anita Tillmann, Managing Partner of the Premium Group, announced a new format under the title 'The Ground'. The focus will be on denim and young fashion brands. Addressees are not only the fashion industry, but also end consumers. "It is no longer about individual products. It is about brands and their philosophy, about transparency, about the future. With The Ground we want to create a marketplace of purpose and value, a community space where denim and streewear brands come into contact with Gen-Y," explains Tillmann.
Here, too, the sustainable claim: all exhibitors in the new segment must already fulfill at least five of the SDGs.
Another role will be played by the lifestyle universe of skateboarding, which will be on display throughout the city: "During Frankfurt Fashion Week, we will welcome SKTWK, Skateweek, as a new event, celebrated as a city-wide skateboard festival revolving around skateboarding, music, parties, street art and fashion," announces Markus Frank, City Councillor and Head of the Department of Economics of the City of Frankfurt am Main.
By the way, it's a déja vu for Frankfurt, which was once the home of the Bright skateboarding fair, which took place between 2005 and 2010 in the Old Police Headquarters of the City of Frankfurt before the event moved to Berlin and was bought up by Premium Exhibitions, but ultimately lay fallow. "We're going to retell an old story, and more than ever before, consumers will be part of it," explains Tillmann.
The center of the catwalk shows, which are being developed together with the Untitled Project agency, will be the Festhalle of Messe Frankfurt, "as a counterpart to the Grand Palais in Paris," says Tillmann. More advanced, hybrid concepts are being sought here, with sustainability and digitalization also being the main focus. One highlight is to be a catwalk show on the Main bridge 'Eiserner Steg', which in turn is to reach end consumers.
All in all, Anita Tillmann expects 2,000 brands and around 140,000 visitors consisting of trade visitors and end consumers to attend.
As far as trade fairs are concerned, Detlef Braun announces further news: "Neonyt, Seek, Premium and now The Ground: This will not be the end of the line. We will continue to expand our trade show portfolio". More information on this will follow in spring 2021.
Kick Off with Forum of TextilWirtschaft
On the occasion of Frankfurt Fashion Week, TextilWirtschaft, the leading trade medium in the fashion industry, is moving its traditional industry get-together TW Forum from Heidelberg and Schwetzingen to Frankfurt for the first time. The Fashion Week kick-off event will be the presentation of the renowned Forum Award on Sunday evening, July 4 in Frankfurt's Palmengarten, followed by the TW Conference on Monday morning.
Detlef Braun also announced the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Zeit-Verlagsgruppe, the Burda Verlag, Condé Nast and the Fashion Council Germany (FCG) as further (media) partners who will also be organizing events, parties and conferences.
But what about Corona?
"We now know that the virus does not like UV rays, heat and summer," announces Peter Feldmann, Mayor of the City of Frankfurt am Main, full of optimism. "So we can give Corona a little bargain with our July appointment alone and plan analogous activities and direct encounters inside and outside."
