Yesterday the winter edition (January 26-27) of Modefabriek in Amsterdam ended. As in previous seasons there was a lot to discover in the halls of the Amsterdam RAI location.

At the back of the East Hall, visitors came across the Denim Market. Here everything revolved around indigo. Besides newcomer denim labels such as Homage, Cruel or If Denim, concept store operators such as Harmony Hendrickx presented their assortment and vintage denim pieces. Designer Leonie Vlaar, who founded her label of the same name in Utrecht in 2018 and also has an atelier there, sells handmade unique pieces only on request. She had her sewing machine with her. "I only make made-to-order pieces and use mainly denim overhangs," said Vlaar. The handmade pieces start at €350 retail for denim jackets.

Kim van Rossum, founder of Homage, said, "We are totally satisfied with the fair so far. This morning, we have already had many interested visitors at our booth and have even been able to acquire new customers.”

Rosemaryn Medenblik, owner of Amsterdam concept store Studio NE9EN, was specifically interested in the Scandinavian brands. “I am here to get some inspiration for my assortment, I didn’t come for a special brand,” she said. Speaking of Scandinavian labels, wide, straight cuts and Scandinavian, minimalist influences could be found in many collections. A strong focus this season was on muted colors. Olive, burgundy and above all caramel shades dominated. Teddy fur could be found almost everywhere and fleece sweaters are among the absolute must-haves of the coming winter.  A contrast to the Scandinavian clean chic are the ’80s influences, which could be seen especially on knitted sweaters and denim silhouettes. High-waist and wide cut denim, oversized denim jackets and denim overalls are totally on trend.(Find a list of the hottest trends of Modefabriek at the end of this article.)

Denise Graff, brand marketing manager, Iriedaily, said: "We exhibited at Off_South last summer for the first time and the feedback was so great that we wanted to come back again. Off_South as a platform and with the brand mix is perhaps a little more appropriate, but so far we are very satisfied with the course of the trade fair. We will certainly be back at Off_South in the summer. "

In the West Hall there was again a selection of independent up-and-coming labels, which were selected and curated by the fashion recruitment and consultancy agency HTNK. They included Coco Bonito, Cold Wash, Hadaka Denim, Denise Roobol and Studio18.

Anyone who wanted to do some sport was in for a treat in the North Hall, where they could register for a quick boxing course or play Ping Pong. The Dress like a man platform connected to the North Hall had the motto “The Black Suit” this year. The Amsterdam label Vanderwilt presented its menswear collection for the first time. Designer Paul Kruize, known for his handmade jeans, showed a custom black suit and young designer Liesbeth Sterkenburg presented her streetwear collection as well as her accessories line.

Contrary to some rumors that this would be the last edition at RAI and that there will be another location in the north of Amsterdam this summer, Janine Hurink, PR & communication manager of Modefabriek, assured that there will be no other location for the summer edition of the fair. "There are always rumors that we are not staying here, but that's not true,” she said. “For the time being, no other location is planned for Modefabriek."

However, it is not yet known in which premises the Off_South event, which will take place for the second time this summer, will move into. "We hope that we will be able to announce the new location of Off_South in two weeks," said Hurink.
