Up until May trade shows are cancelled or postponed. But since Covid-19 is not yet under control and time is running, also the schedule of the new season kick-off events starting in June might change.

Yesterday, news broke that Panorama Berlin is cancelled–as managing director Jörg Wichmann explains–the reason is a lack of “planning security in the next eight to ten weeks” which makes it impossible “to organize a convincing event this summer.” This brings up the question if and how Berlin’s lead events Premium and Seek as well as Neonyt will take place.

So far, organizers react cautious: "As a trade fair organizer, we bear a great responsibility and act very prudently. We therefore think it would be wrong to make a firm statement at this point in time as to whether Premium and Seek will have to be postponed or cancelled due to the spread of the corona virus and the resulting consequences. It is simply too early to determine that as no one is currently able to foresee the length and the full impact of the current situation. For this reason, we will not comment on it before mid or the end of April,” Anita Tillmann and Jörg Arntz, managing directors, Premium Group, state towards SPORTSWEAR INTERNATIONAL.

And: “We are currently talking to our all our business partners in order to determine what’s best for all market participants and we will continue to do so. In addition we are in contact with the relevant trade fair organizers at national and international level to examine all the possibilities and, if necessary, to coordinate on alternative dates.”

Thimo Schwenzfeier, show director of Messe Frankfurt’s Neonyt, agrees: “With the coronavirus, of course, the situation is different now. We will now wait a few days and if necessary cancel the event, but at this point in time we cannot make any statements in this regard."

The reluctance of its former Tempelhof trade show neighbor Panorama Berlin does not have an impact though: "Nothing has changed for us, whether Panorama does not take place because of the insolvency or because of the coronavirus. We would also claim the space in Tempelhof regardless of Panorama and let Neonyt take place. Tempelhof is still the best option for us, as there is only limited space available in Berlin.“

Apart from all uncertainties the Premium team remains positive and even sees a chance for the industry: “There is no question that we are in a dramatic crisis. However, in order to remain optimistic, we also see an opportunity to re-assess some of the current market structures and rules, for example with regard to delivery cycles in order to help all market participants.”
