There was quite a bit of sportswear and denim on display at the latest edition of Capsule, which took place over three days last week on Pier 36 in New York. The show was actually a three-shows-under-one-umbrella concept with Capsule (forward and up-and-coming designers and brands), Cabana (travel/resort brands) and Brand Assembly (contemporary designer brands) all showing together under one roof with open access to all three.
Aside from the bevvy of brands showing, the event featured special attractions and area such as a DIY Scrunchie Station that allowed one to create a hair accessory from upcycled fabrics, a tarot card reader and a section that highlighted CBD products. The overall vibe was generally relaxed and happy on the third and final day and most exhibitors agreed that the prior two had been busy.

Among the top denim brands showing were Lee, Wrangler and BLDWN, which exhibited denim along with a very on-trend overcoat in nubby teddy fur.

The latest tie-dye looks were visible at Maiden Noir, Lee and LA-based brand R.G. Kane, which also offers denim for fall.

Carefree vacation styles for both parts of the year were exemplified by Cordova’s colorful ski suits (winter) and Golden Sun’s cashmere-blend tops (summer) that feature embroidery and sayings that can be personalized. Hong Kong-based bag brand Doughnut was also there for travel help and offered a wide range of plane-friendly satchels and knapsacks in everything from tie-dye to solid pastels.

The gathering also reflected the current political and environmental zeitgeist. Official Rebrand, by non-binary artist MI Leggett, and which had shown at NY Men’s Day a few days earlier, was there with their amazing take on used clothing that the designer paints on to “rebrand.” The collection shared a booth with Fey Minori Yanagase, who also reworks old clothes and Ka Wa Key, which also showed at Men’s Day. The latter gender-neutral brand made a splash with its “The Little Prince”-inspired collection with sweaters that include slogans such as “I Am So Tired of Toxic Masculinity.”
