The latest edition of Liberty New York–the event’s tenth season, believe it or not–was a resounding success as it returned to Pier 94 on the Hudson River last week. Fresh new brands and exciting new areas on the show floor injected freshness into the concept, including The Five Pillars lounge at the entrance which showcased the work of about 30 brands in five distinct areas that are driving retail today: Innovation, Activation, Social Responsibility, Collaboration and Exclusivity.

Likewise, the Quest section, which debuted at the last Las Vegas edition, arrived in New York for the first time and highlighted 15 brands that mix luxury sportswear and sartorial dressing such as C.P. Company and the new outerwear company The Very Warm.

Trendwise, winter jackets in all their forms were the stars of the show and ranged from traditional military-based ones to modern takes on puffer coats. Denim was important too and was often blended with streetwear styles and tracksuit-type looks to give it an especially edgy look for the season.
Here are some of our favorites from the show:
The Most Impressive Denim Debut:
Definitely Outland Denim, a brand new line from Australia that runs its own factory in Cambodia that employs women, pays them a fair wage and has saved them from a life as sex slaves. Its story is inspiring and its men’s and women’s denim in three styles each is both stylish and high quality.

Edgiest denim line:
Cult of Individuality is super streety for fall with large message prints, dangling straps, tracksuits and velvet and a cool collaboration with the jewelry line King Baby for hardware.

Best military-themed jackets:
Cockpit USA’s jackets are based on authentic military specs, which is probably why “Dunkirk” star Tom Hardy is a fan of the brand, which offers a WWII-style RAF jacket much like the one he wears in that really good (and clearly influential menswear-wise for fall) movie. Cockpit’s shearling trench and Navy shirts in chambray are also on-trend and ooze military authenticity.

Best new jackets
Outwear line The Very Warm offers margins of 65% to 70% while most brands are in the 50% to 55% range. And its glossy styles with down filling are modern, lightweight and superwarm.

Best light leather coats
Jakett, a line out of New York, has some amazing washed leather models in animal prints or unusual colors such as pink and black.

Best heavy-duty coats
Parajumpers, which just opened as separate USA office, has a huge assortment of coats this season, many of which are made from lambskin and nylon and are made to seriously protect from the cold.

Best use of corduroy
Cord has made a huge comeback for fall and one of our favorite uses of its is in the bright printed button-down shirts of new brand Modern Liberation.

Best retro sneakers
Longtime British brand Gola has an extensive archive and has used it to its advantage for its 1970s-inspired issue of its Mark Cox models and its collaboration with waxed fabric manufacturer The British Millerain Co.
