Swedish accessory label Sandqvist has made its first international retail foray with a store in London. Located in Soho’s Berwick Street, it counts fellow Swedes Nudie Jeans and Our Legacy among its new neighbors. Fredrik Nilsby of Dawn of Ideas is the brains behind the distinctive interior of the 86 sq.m. (920 sq.ft.) space (Nilsby has designed Sandqvist’s other stores, too). The style exudes an undeniably Swedish air, with clean lines and plenty of natural wood interspersed with marble tabletops and galvanized steel elements.

The full bag range is stocked alongside a smattering of items such as rustic canvas aprons, bottle carriers, and wall-suspended flowerpots in the guise of mini bags. For AW16, Sandqvist will re-launch its women’s collection, extending it to encompass some twenty different styles across two lines, Leather Classics and Icons.

Ahead of the grand opening this week, we asked co-founder Anton Sandqvist to elaborate a little on Sandqvist’s affinity with the UK and reveal the plans ahead:

How come you chose London for your first global store?
The UK has been a strong market for Sandqvist for a long time; it’s our best export market alongside Germany. We’ve already established some brand recognition in London, so it felt natural to open our first international store here. We want to give Londoners the chance to experience the Sandqvist atmosphere, with access to the full range of bags.

Which cities might be next?
Our long-term plan is to open Sandqvist stores in cities within our strongest markets. Berlin might follow, and maybe Paris after that, but as yet we have no tangible plans. Before deciding on the next step, we want to make sure our new London flagship store is fully up and running.
