Eco-Age, the British/Italian consulting and creative agency that has been involved in shaping sustainability strategies for the last 12 years, recently launched its new Eco-Verse division. The aim of the branch is to advise clients on how to enter the NFT and metaverse world while respecting environmental and social standards.

This new dedicated Eco-Age branch aims to support companies seeking to produce and market NFTs or enter the metaverse world and raise awareness on pressing societal and environmental issues while trying to guarantee more equitable and moral standards focused on aspects such as sustainability, decentralization and human-centric frameworks with the support of Eco-Age creative director Livia Firth and CEO Simon Whitehouse, along with sustainability, technology and blockchain experts.

Eco-Age, whose portfolio of clients includes Wembley Stadium, the Football Association, Gucci, Diesel, Reformation, Ugg and The Woolmark Company, has recently launched some sustainability initiatives, including The Green Carpet Challenge, The Green Carpet Fashion Awards and the Renaissance Awards, which debuted in 2021.

Eco-Age was already involved in projects related to key features of the metaverse world. For instance, it filmed the awards ceremony The Green Carpet Fashion Awards’ 2020 edition in collaboration with the Italian Fashion Chamber, and used virtual reality, augmented reality, real-time game engines and holograms. Moreover, for 2021’s inaugural Renaissance Awards, it launched an alternative concept within the traditional act of prizegiving by awarding winners with NFTs made from Renaissance masterpieces, among other innovative initiatives.

Livia Firth, creative director, Eco-Age, explained how the new division is operating.

What services is Eco-Verse offering?
The Eco-Verse is a division of Eco-Age dedicated to sustainable and ethical issues around the new augmented reality, virtual reality and the metaverse world and it operates on two fronts. On the one side it operates on consultancy by supporting companies and advising clients on how to enter the NFT and metaverse world making sure they respect both environmental and social, equitable, moral standards. On the other it acts through advocacy as Eco-Verse will work on highlighting the issues and creating solutions (particularly around a legal framework) to guarantee ethical and environmental standards are met when dealing with alternative realities.

When will it be operative?
It is already operative and we are working with strategic partners such as global supply chain expert and human rights specialist Auret Van Herdeen; AnamXR, an industry-first social Metaverse platform built upon blockchain, cloud and game engine technologies, including Unreal Engine, whose mission is to build the metaverse with sustainability, decentralization and human-centric frameworks at the forefront. We are also collaborating with the Cardano Foundation–with whom we have already worked to produce and mine the Renaissance Awards NFT crypto art.

We are now working to gather different stakeholders and having roundtable discussions around the metaverse, which raises major questions of human and labor rights, emissions, water, biodiversity, waste and similar aspects. The advocacy mission of the Eco-Verse will work on a framework or matrix that breaks down all of the issues and shows how interlinked and interdependent they are. Further to that, we will work with regulators and the EU commission to come up with solutions.

How would you define the mission of Eco-Verse?
I like to quote Professor (and star in The Great Hack documentary) David Carroll who told me: “Today we are at a fork in the road as far as technology and society are concerned: we can take the road of ‘Cyber Punk’ (which is a dystopian vision, and a very dark world) or we can choose to take the other road, the road of ‘Solar Punk’ (which is more utopian, through the eyes of sustainability and equality).” This is the mission of the Eco-Verse.
