A high volume of returns is not only a cost factor for companies, but also represents a burden for the environment. Especially when buying shoes online, the problem persists, partly because sizes differ within different brands.

This is where Spotsize wants to come in: the German start-up, founded in 2018 by former SAP employee Jacqueline Yildirim, offers an app that, in a sense, creates a selfie of the foot, through which the foot is measured once to determine the personal size and thereby suggest the consumer the appropriate shoe size at different shoe manufacturers.

To offer this service, Spotsize claims to find the right size by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI), 3D sensor and augmented reality (AR) technologies: The user scans his/her foot with a mobile phone. This is technically performed with the help of a depth, ToF or Lidar sensor built in smartphones as well as AI to spatially detect the foot in 3D. With the help of this biometric 3D scan a digital twin of a human foot using just a mobile phone is created.

With the digital twin now acquired, the system can measure the feet and compare with all available shoe data. The algorithm calculates the best fit by matching the dimensions of the real foot with the thousands of real product data records (from the online shop). To find the right size the digital twin is matched in real time. In just a few seconds, the user gets his/her size recommendation.

Spotsize is available for consumers and retailers: Consumers can download the Spotsize app (from mid-2021; for Android users at the end of 2021) and find out their correct US/EU/UK size for various sneaker brands; online retailers and fashion brands can integrate Spotsize into their own shopping app and use the service globally from the cloud.
