P&C will open its first eco megastore in Berlin in 2023. The store will open inside the remodeled Potsdamer Platz Arkaden, which has been undergoing conversion into a so-called “flagship destination” for over two years. The company has now confirmed this in response to an inquiry from TextilWirtschaft.
"As the company's first pure sustainability store, sustainability solutions are being tested here on three floors and 3,500 sq. meters, which could also gradually find their way into other P&C locations," the Düsseldorf headquarters said. The store will not only carry more sustainably produced articles, but will also give the topic of sustainability a platform through various event formats. No more detailed information are available until now.
The chain store will thus become one of the center's largest anchor tenants. According to market information, P&C's managing director Stephan Fanderl is primarily responsible for the project. It is not yet known under which name or with which name suffix the company will present itself at Potsdamer Platz.
The new opening is not expected to affect the “classic” P&C store located just a few meters away in the Mall of Berlin on Leipziger Platz, which is operated by HGHI. The store opened in 2014 and is performing “very well," according to Harald Gerome Huth, CEO, HGHI. The lease runs until at least the end of 2024, he said, after which he expects the contract to be renewed.
The Potsdamer Platz Arkaden opened in 1998 and has lost some of its appeal in recent years. Among other things, the nearby Mall of Berlin at Leipziger Platz is causing problems for the center. As part of the repositioning, a shopping center with high-street flair and around 90 stores will be created in the arcades. The current upper-floor shopping street will be removed and replaced by a two-story façade to offer tenants new presentation and space options.
Key anchor tenants known so far include TK Maxx, a "food hall of the future" called Manifesto and a megastore by U.S. toy brand Mattel. According to TW information, in the same location they will also open first German flagship store of NBA, the American basketball league, a store that will occupy more than 1000 sq.meter of retail space.
