The Benefit Society Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale Srl has achieved B Corp certification. It is the first linen spinning mill to achieve this recognition and one of the first companies in the textile segment, thus confirming its attention to ESG criteria. 





The company founded 150 years ago in 1873 is part of the Marzotto Group and is one of the oldest European companies, a symbol of Italian excellence and an international benchmark for high-quality linen and hemp spinning. 





This expert manufacturer of natural fiber yarns not only continues on its path of respect for tradition, and commitment to environmental protection, but also pursues its aim to study and develop new applications outside the linen industry.

Linificio has been able to reach this milestone because it has been able to achieve the high standards of social and environmental performance, as well as the accountability and transparency required for such status.




"We cannot consider this certification as a point of arrival, but as a spur to empower ourselves to do even more and better, as well as a stimulus to find opportunities for collaboration with other companies in the B Corp movement that share our same approach," commented Pierluigi Fusco Girard, CEO of the company. 




Among Linificio's various goals there is the ambition to spread awareness of the sustainability characteristics of the plant-derived fibers of flax and hemp, their beneficial impact on the environment, their cultivation, and their many uses outside the textile sector.




Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale is also acting as the first ambassador with concrete projects, such as the return of flax cultivation to Italy and their applications in the composite materials sector.

 




Among the various projects the spinning company is involved, there are initiatives to protect biodiversity and contributions to reducing CO2 emissions. 




This year Linificio has, in fact, published its first Sustainability Report in which it measures and communicates its business efficiency from an economic, social and environmental point of view, stating the real impact of the company on the territory and the community.

Benefit Society has always invested in flax as the green fiber of the future, considered the most sustainable fiber of all also for the absence of artificial irrigation that its cultivation requires, while giving rise to several projects aimed at the common good and in particular at reducing environmental pollution.

After more than 60 years, Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale has brought the culture of flax cultivation back to Italy, sowing several plots in Lombardy, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Puglia. The company is recreating the Italian supply chain from field to yarn, or fabric, to produce the only totally Made in Italy certified linen yarn that is now available on the market: the Lino d'Italia. 




One of the most innovative examples of this company's commitment is L!ncredible, a line of food packaging products made of 100% linen developed after years of research and development.




The project offers nets for fruits and vegetables with the same performance as traditional plastic products, with the advantage of being biodegradable and highly sustainable.

Linificio e Canapificio Nazionale is also active in the supply chain that makes flax and hemp fiber composite materials complementary to synthetic materials-particularly in the automotive sector-and with advantages in terms of sustainability, improved mechanical performance, strength, overall reduction in the weight of structures, increased durability and vibration damping. 




B Corp certification identifies companies that, in addition to having profit goals, meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. 




It is a voluntary three-year certification issued by the evaluates the company in its entirety according to the rigorous standards set forth in the B Impact Assessment (BIA) based upon criteria like worker welfare, connection with the community and dialogue with the realities of the territory in which it is located, about environmental impact, model of governance. 




Today there are 6,400 B Corp companies worldwide, involving more than 500,000 people. B Corp Companies in Italy are 215 and involve16,000 people involved, following an increase of 69% towards this movement in Italy.
