Napapijri, the outdoor and sportswear brand, has just launched Northfarer, a new eco-friendly interpretation of the anorak jacket, a style that is deeply tied to the brands own origins and love of nature.

The anorak, whose name comes from anoraq,” a term that in Kaalalisiut language indicates the traditional highly protective jacket made from animal leather to be worn from the head, was reinterpreted in various ways throughout the brands lifetime since its foundation in 1987.

This iconic piece of clothing’s latest interpretation, the Northfarer, was launched on December 2021 in two drops, to be followed by three additional ones in 2022.

The new style has a hyper-structured silhouette with clean lines that aim to make this outerwear classic become an urban must-have. It is made with premium materials with water- and windproof properties, while it’s PFC-free.

The first two jackets that debuted are the Northfarer Black model, a total black anorak carrying two zippers at the neck, a weatherproof visor that is padded with down-free Thermofibre fibers, and the Northfarer Mont Blanc, a white model that carries an allover print motif of the well-known mountain.

Three more new models will arrive on the market, Northfarer Napapijri X Fiorucci, to be launched in January 2022, the Northfarer Main line, debuting in February, and the Northfarer Napapijri X Moreno Ferrari [editor’s note: a former C.P. Company’s designer], to debut in April 2022.

Why did Napapijri launch this initiative?
In 1990 Napapijri was three years old and venturing in the world of outerwear with its first jacket. True to our passion for Nordic design and iconic outerwear, we borrowed the anorak shape from the expertise of early Greenlandic Inuit Eskimo to create a windproof and waterproof jacket with a contemporary character. This is how our first anorak, the Skidoo, was born. Soon after, the Rainforest anorak took over European streets and went on to become our most-known anorak. Thirty-five years later, we are back with yet another anorak destined to leave its mark: The Northfarer. With it, we revisit the anorak cut, inject it with new life and a new, streamlined design that transports this classic into the future.

Why can you consider these jackets eco-friendly?
The Northfarer is made in premium materials for an all-around performance. Just like all our jackets, it is PFC-Free and uses Thermo-Fibre insulation as an alternative to down. In addition, the Mainline version is made of recycled super-light Cordura, while the Napapijri X Moreno Ferrari one is 100% recyclable and Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold.

You decided to launch five different special edition jackets. Why did you choose these specific partnerships?
Each special edition is dedicated to a key aspect of our creative vision and iconic spirit. The Napapijri X Fiorucci partnership works as a bridge between past and future, and wants to be a celebration of two iconic Italian brands built on colorful self-expression linking arms and projecting each other into the future. On the other hand, the collaboration with Italian designer Moreno Ferrari comes from our shared determination to take a stand in support of a more conscious approach to fashion. This is why this capsule juxtaposes the urban inspiration of graphic elements such as construction nets and urban patterns, with a completely circular, recyclable and C2C certified soul.
