Goldwin 0, Goldwin’s experimental platform and responsibly focused collection, has just released its second and wider apparel selection, setting a more defined direction within the Japanese sportswear specialised brand's future development.

After its debut for f/w 2022/2023, Goldwin 0 s/s 2023 collection offers pieces made with Spiber Brewed Protein fibers, special polymers produced through a fermentation process that uses sugars and microbes, and Pertex fabrics by a Bluesign System Partner company, along with knitwear pieces manufactured according to the 3D Wholegarment technology, a series of techniques meant to strive towards a symbiotic relationship with the natural environment.

Natsuko Koike, marketing and PR director, Goldwin 0, explained how the project was born and how it will further evolve.

How was Goldwin 0 born?
Goldwin Inc. offers products which support active lives that provide comfort, technology, design, durability, and are produced according to methods that leave the least environmental impact.

As part of this new project, we have been trying our best to represent at best that specific Japanese way of living that coexists with nature. To complete our vision and mission we created Goldwin 0, which we position as a project, and an experimental platform to demonstrate Goldwin’s commitment and philosophy that aim for a better future for everyone by collaborating with designers, artists, writers and so forth across the world.

How is the project evolving?
The first collection we launched arrived in the market for f/w 2022. The first collection laid out the foundations of the Goldwin 0 mission to establish unity between art and science, with the least impact on the environment, in a continual pursuit without conclusion.

It was designed by Julia Rodowicz and Jean-Luc Ambridge, who continued to design it for s/s 2023 according to the same initial philosophy.

The s/s 2023 collection is expanding the project’s original principles, experimenting with more materials, sport silhouettes and bold colorways, in a more expansive range of utilitarian, dexterous and boundary pushing product.

What are the main characteristics of this second s/s 2023 collection?
The s/s 2023 collection offers 17 styles, all of whose are keenly focused on an environmentally friendly approach.

Being responsible for the environment at our best for now and for the future is one of our priorities. We are aiming at that not only by implementing sustainable materials such as Brewed Protein and recycled materials, but also by eliminating unnecessary processes in manufacturing as much as possible.

Can you explain how?
For instance, our Wholegarment selection of pieces is produced by optimizing knitting operations in order to lower as much as possible material waste production.

Along with that, we also offer repair services and educate our customer to follow proper care methods for longer use, upcycle, collect used products and recycle fin order to produce new materials and products.

Our aim is to reach Goldwin’s Play Earth 2030 goal by selecting the best possible strategy as a company and work together with our supply chains facing challenges that require mid- and long-term efforts.

Where is Godwin 0 selling?
Although the anticipation for the Goldwin 0 collections grows each season, we are focusing distribution on Goldwin retail stores like for instance, Tokyo Harajuku, Tokyo Marunouchi, along with our flagships in Munich and San Francisco, and through our online store, and the wholesale accounts that can convey the Goldwin 0 philosophy. Among them there are, for instance, Browns in Europe, Sense and Haven in North America, Havn in Australia and Joyce in China.

Did the project achieve any certifications or acknowledgments?
We did not apply for any certificate for the moment, but we are using innovative sustainable fabrics as Spiber Brewed Protein fiber, a protein material made primarily from plant-derived biomass. The project's s/s 2023 collection has been using Spiber mixed with cotton to create a denim jacket and trousers, treated with a special 30% less water than a traditional denim piece.

These two pieces encapsulate Goldwin 0’s mission statement perfectly, as the fermentation process used to create the yarn utilizes microorganisms, meaning the denim is created without using any fossil fuels for the raw material. This means it takes a step forward in building a sustainable future.

Could Goldwin 0 represent the future evolution for the whole brand?
Goldwin 0 remains a project and not a brand. And it stands on the fundamental belief of Goldwin Inc. and all brands in our portfolio.

The number 0 in its name stands for setting a beginning, as this project is evolving in order to offer ideas that can help improve and inspire our brands and the world. We also think that the shape of 0 can be considered a circle, which represents our hope to unite everyone, including our brand, designers and customers involved in this project.

Our hope is to continue this platform to lead the Goldwin company and brand to envision a better future and make necessary changes happen for it.

Are you planning to add more product categories in the future? If so, which ones?
We will proceed by starting a new cycle string from f/w 2024. With each new cycle, we are trying to evolve even more in order to bring bigger and better impacts to the industry and more inspiration to the world.
