Eco-friendly fashion continues to evolve and express itself in most different segments and product categories.

Footwear, in particular, has speeded up in terms of innovation and research, and has evolved significantly in recent times. The SPIN OFF has selected some most innovative and trendy projects focused on preserving the environment.

A conscious street-attitude
The Japanese streetwear brand Suicoke has just launched its new Eco line as a concentrate of various re-used fabrics and materials. Whether it's leftover fabric from manufacturing or recycled nylon, many sources make up its Eco line.

Among the most innovative components of this new collection, Suicoke has included foot beds  made with sugarcane sourced from Brazil. This material is a fully renewable resource that grows quickly and removes carbon from the atmosphere.

The Japanese brand has been collaborating with the rubber sole specialist Vibram for long. One of its most sustainable solutions is Ecostep Evo, a good performance sole made up of a minimum of 30% recycled Vibram rubber, which provides added durability and improved grip on both wet and dry surfaces.

Most of Suicoke’s sandals  of this collection, have their uppers made by recycling waste materials from manufacturing like, for instance, unused lint and fabric during thread and weave processing. Their nylon tapes, stitching and brand label, instead, are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.

Suicoke has further and more ambitious plans as it aims to offer styles that are fully made from recycled or biodegradable components and continue its mission to lower its carbon footprint and still maintain its quality standards. Retail prices range between €168 and €208.

When sneakers love the ocean
The Spanish responsible brand Ecoalf has recently launched The Prince Knit sneaker from Ecoalf, a new sneaker model that claims to have the lowest carbon footprint in the world, with an emission value of 4.85 kilos of carbon dioxide, much lower when compared with the avarage emission of 13.6 kilo emission of a "regular" senaker.

Ecoalf could measure this result by collaborating with renowned, Spanish innovation and technology institute INESCOP, after taking into account the strict guidelines of the European Union. The research covered all areas of the product's life cycle: from the origin of raw materials to the end of the sneakers' life cycle.

The main component of the Prince Knit sneaker is Ecoalf's signature Ocean Yarn. The high-quality yarn is derived from plastic bottles that are collected from the ocean floor and recycled as part of the Ecoalf Foundation's "Upcycling the Oceans" project. To this end, Ecoalf works with more than 3,500 fishermen in Spain, France, Italy and Greece. Since the project's inception in 2015, more than 1,000 tons of marine debris have been collected and recycled to date. The Prince Knit Sneakers cost €93 and are already available.
