Skin of Nature is a project that was launched in 2020 by Elena Beraldo, a young Italian designer who loves sport, adventure and the urban environment along with innovative design and sustainable fashion.

Beraldo lives between Italy and Hong Kong, where her atelier is based and where she works as consultant developing sustainable collections for various fashion brands.

As part of Skin of Nature, she has recently launched Different Kind, a limited edition capsule collection made with biodegradable nylon. The capsule consists of four outerwear pieces, three outer jackets and a pair of shorts. The items feature a contemporary Eastern-inspired minimalistic design and are gender-fluid, highly functional pieces to be worn in the country or city.

Each piece of the capsule Different Kind is made up of a wind- and waterproof biodegradable nylon fabric and accessories such as stoppers and zippers made of bioplastic obtained from recycling food waste or recycled materials.

These items are designed so that they can be recycled thanks to the KI-72 system, an innovative design method invented by Madex, an Italian outerwear manufacturer, a method that can combine circular design and material innovation coherently. As part of the project the brand also offers its customers a repair service, in case of need, and a disposal one for the pieces’ end of life.

The Different Kind capsule is made with Amni Soul Eco, a nylon fiber by Fulgar, an Italian fiber manufacturer specialized in producing sustainable yarns. Amni Soul Eco, in particular, degrades in just five years, differently from regular nylon that degrades over many decades.

The capsule matches well with the Aquatilis collection, also part of Skin of Nature, a line offering pieces that are aimed at active lifestyle fans. It includes tops, leggings and shorts characterized by prints of creatures from the water underworld, as captured by macro photographs by Alexander Semenov, a marine biologist and scuba diving photographer.

The fabrics used for this capsule are made out of regenerated polyester and printed by using a waterless printing technique. The designer especially prefers to use this material as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions up to 30%, water consumption up to 20% and energy consumption by a maximum of 60%.

The brand mostly sells via e-commerce. Prices for an oversize outer jacket made of Amni Soul Eco are about US$333 (about €295), for a long outer jacket US$415 (about €368). A pair of leggings made with Recycled PET costs US$115 (around €103), while a bralette, made of the same material, costs US$90 (about €80).
