The Dutch jeans brand G-Star Raw has been involved in creating artful denim creations since when it was founded in 1989. Since then, it has been committed to craftsmanship and continuously explores the endless possibilities of art and denim.

Over the years, several abstract denim artworks have been created, including the Raw Denim Tutu, designed for the Dutch National Ballet. However, only in 2022 the brand launched the new art platform “The Art of Raw”.

This new project will be developed and implemented in collaboration with various international award-winning design talents such as Teun Zwets, Athena Gronti, Lenny Stöpp, Hozan Zangana, Nienke Sikkema, Iwan Pol and Pien Post. In line with the brand's responsible initiatives, the artists were given the opportunity to experiment with denim remnants and create unique pieces expressing their own art, while thus upcycling materials.

The first participating artist is Teun Zwets. This young talent was born in 1992 and graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2020, he immediately won the Kazerne Award and has since established himself in the international art scene thanks to his creations mostly made from material waste.

For The Art of Raw, he designed the furniture object "Denim Living" that was launched in April, 14, 22. Starting with a chair prototype, Teun first built a metal frame as a base. To give it more strength, he layered leftover denim piece by piece and finally laminated the fabric with a binder to make it stable. The finished piece of furniture was a lamp, cabinet and chair all in one, making it a unique work of art.

"I felt very honored when G-Star asked me to collaborate on this project. At the same time, I was very excited because I hadn't worked much with denim before! Experimenting and trying new techniques is always a part of my process. First I made a prototype, then played around with the denim and finally created the unique piece of furniture Denim Living,” commented Teun Zwets.

Throughout the coming year, G-Star will support new monthly collaborations from up-and-coming designers approaching different artistic approaches - from glass art and textile design to sculpture and ceramic art, always using G-Star's centerpiece, denim. Each new collaboration will be unveiled every month on G-Star Raw's social media.
