Italian/Japanese fashion brand Tatras, renowned for its luxury down jackets, has recently opened in Aoyama’s famously fashionable Kotto-dori. It’s the company’s second flagship after its Milan store situated in via Bigli 11. Tatras, designed by Masanaka Sakao, is the latest addition to Aoyama’s luxury market and lines up beside stores such as J.M. Weston and several other leading high-end labels.

Tatras occupies the first basement floor of the multi-floor complex which includes select shop Stada Est (1st and 2nd floor), an Italian restaurant, Pastanico, on the upper floor and a multi-use event space below Tatras which is presently hosting an exhibition by Kyoto’s legendary artisan group Go On.

Tatras, which showcases its products for men, women and children like an elegant art installation, makes great use of Japanese aesthetics, Italian workmanship and Polish goose feather and down. Every Tatras product is therefore comprised of 10% goose feather and 90% down and is created for urban professionals and metropolitan use.

The 190 sqm Tatras space, designed by Sakao - who in addition to designing Tatras is also President of the Leaps and Bound group who own Stada Est, exhibits a grey concrete tone and the warmness of black steel. Strada Est has a lighter and brighter look, however, and carries some of the best lines in contemporary fashion such as Band of Outsiders, Y-3 and even on-trend American sneaker brand Saucony who are presently making great waves in the Japanese sportswear market.

The complex is a welcome addition to the Aoyama neighborhood but it’ll have its work cut out as it competes with several other select stores and flagships representing the best in both domestic and global fashion.
