The Tacchini family is going back to its sportswear roots. Alessandro Tacchini, son of Sergio Tacchini, is launching Sandys.HT, a new medium to high-end sportswear brand.

Sergio Tacchini, the Italian tennis champion, founded his eponymous sportswear and activewear brand in 1966 and in 2007 sold it to Billy Ngok’s Hong Kong-based company Hembly International.

“After the last few years we could no longer stay away from the fashion and sportswear worlds,” said Alessandro Tacchini. “For this we decided to launch a brand that is new for the consumer, though it may sound familiar to insiders.”

In fact the brand’s name is the very name the company that used to produce Sergio Tacchini in its earlier days.

“The ‘HT’ addition, a shortened form for Hi-Tech and High-Touch, wants to emphasize our company’s forward-minded approach,” said Tacchini.

The new collection will debut in S/S 2011 in Italy and Europe, with 50-55 items for men and women, though a test collection will be unveiled this fall at 100 selected retailers in Italy and Europe, featuring two functional yet smart travel jacket styles for men and women.

The collection is characterized by a sophisticated sporty aesthetic and highly functional fabrications such as stretch pique, water- and wind-resistant and breathable fabrics, thermosealed seams, and waterproof zippers. “We have chosen to employ made in Italy materials only. Production will be done in Europe and in the Mediterranean basin in order to guarantee top quality products,” Tacchini said.

A second brand, aimed at a more exclusive segment, could break in F/W 2011-2012, as part of a new sport-fashion company.

“Our idea is to offer easy and smart apparel that sports people want to wear after they have finished playing their favorite sports,” said Sergio Tacchini. “Despite selling everything from our old company, we don’t need old paper archives. The right ideas are all clear in our minds.”
