Calik Denim has presented its second Sustainability Report compiled according to the principles of United Nations Global Compact it signed in 2019, after the publishing of its first sustainability report of 2018.
Prepared in compliance with the Global Reporting Initiative Standards core option, this second report includes information on the company’s sustainability efforts for the 2018-19 period, about Calik Denim’s goals for 2025 and the contribution it aims to provide in terms of Sustainable Development Goals.
Calik Denim CEO Fatih Doğan stated that Calik Denim redefines its sustainability approach with a strategic perspective to adapt to changing conditions and to pioneer the sustainability of the industry. He said: "By integrating sustainability into our business model, we aim to turn these risks into opportunities, manage the effects of denim on life, and be a company that can generate positive value for and provide benefits to the stakeholders. In this context, we have set our sustainability strategy as ‘Passion for Denim Passion for Life’ in order to have a positive impact on a better life.”
And he continued: “We've designed smart targets, which are one of the most important steps for implementing our sustainability strategy, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals that guides us in building a sustainable business model. We are regularly sharing the progress through our Sustainability Report regarding the progress on the goals we set in 2019 based on 2016.”

Calik further progress focuses on different areas such as R&D, product quality and safety, and sustainable raw material supply, on local social and economic development, occupational health and safety, human rights, climate change, energy, water management and chemicals management with the aim to reduce its impact on the environment.
Calik Denim has set the Goals for 2025 under four topics, recognizing 2016 as the base year. They are: Environmental Sustainability, Sustainable Raw Material Supply, Innovation and Thought Leadership, Internal and External Stakeholder Rights.

Calik Denim opened the seventh R&D center in the textile sector in Turkey with the certificate obtained in 2011, while the researches conducted in this center are not only limited to denim and fabric. The center conducts researches on advanced textile products with a total of 64 employees, including 42 engineers. Working on different functional features from nanotechnology to smart fabrics, the company has allocated approximately 16 million Turkish Lira, which is 2% of its turnover in 2019, to R&D efforts and aims to allocate 10% of its turnover to investments in innovation in 2025. Calik Denim has already achieved its goal of increasing the impact of R&D, P&D and innovation investments on profitability to 20% in 2019, while increasing its impact on profitability to 31%.
“As a denim company ranked within the 200 biggest exporters of Turkey and after having invested 4.1 million Turkish Lira for environmental investments and expenditures we aim to continue to strengthen our position in the global arena with the efforts we will have in the coming period. Beyond creating an economic value, we will focus on efforts to contribute to the solution of social and environmental problems with a common value approach,” added Doğan.
