On Monday 20 July 2015, at 12 pm, Elio Fiorucci the Milanese designer was found dead in his home, in Corso Vittorio Veneto, probably struck by sudden illness.
He revolutionized fashion and retail since the 1960s when he started travelling to the Swinging London, where he became more aware of his love for fashion as an expression of fun, freedom and natural sexiness. He was the first to recognize the importance of street fashion and to create jeans for women.
He was also the first one to discover new paths and create what later became concept stores, by combining different fashion products, accessories, gadgets, music, books, design objects and many other fun and odd curiosities. Moreover, he discovered the importance of art and music inside fashion stores by collaborating with upcoming and established artists such as, for instance, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jeans-Michel Basquiat, Maripol and a young Madonna in his Milan and New York stores.
Despite his age, he was constantly and untiringly involved in new initiatives and causes in various fields. Recently, he had been named Milan Expo 2015 Ambassador defending animal rights.
He has always been a great fan and sincere friend of Sportswear International Magazine sharing the same international mentality and the desire to always scout for the next youth trends. His last interview for SI was published for the magazine’s 40th Anniversary issue - to read here.
Thank you, Elio, for everything you taught us and the whole fashion world! You taught us the importance of friendship, enthusiasm, curiosity and love for beauty - in their most different expressions.
