To commemorate its 40th anniversary, Stüssy has collaborated with CDG by Comme des Garçons on an exclusive capsule collection of accessible wardrobe essentials. The selection includes a co-branded green satin nylon military MA1 jacket, a midweight pinstripe jacket and matching pant, logo-focused graphic T-shirts, a heavy cotton tote bag and a bucket hat.
Comme des Garçons, founded by Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo in 1969 in Tokyo, is known for bringing avant-garde fashion into the mainstream with deconstructed looks, gender-bending styles and asymmetrical cuts. The brand debuted internationally at Paris Fashion Week in 1981 and continues to offer highly conceptual collections in all-black, unfinished seams and distressed fabrics, maintaining its punk image throughout the decades.
Stüssy originates from the Southern California surf scene and redefined the idea of casualwear while it grew organically from youth movements and revolutionized the clothing business between the ’80s and the ’90s.
Its accidental founder Shawn Stussy was a surfer who used to shape his own boards for friends and locals in Laguna Beach, California. He began screening T-shirts and shorts to sell along with the surfboards as a form of promotion with his surname–plus an added umlaut–written in a graffiti-influenced hand style that became the company logo.
Stüssy celebrates its 40th anniversary with a CDG collab
The brand developed during a time when epochal shifts in the music scene of the late ’70s punk grew, while the early ’80s rap broke out. These two music genres and the lifestyles connected with them set the basis for new modern fashion and cultural expressions that met and flourished within Stüssy.
International musicians, skaters, DJs and artists with similar tastes influenced the brand’s clothing. Trendsetters in New York, London, Tokyo and other areas of the world were eager to get aboard this movement inspired by a network of like-minded individuals and later became the “International Stüssy Tribe” with chapters in New York, Tokyo, London, Berlin and Los Angeles making it spread organically. The brand was committed to producing relevant, good quality clothing at a reasonable price available only at very select stores worldwide in limited quantities, a new concept at the time.
