Last year during Paris Fashion Week it was announced that furniture-store giant Ikea would cooperate with Off-White founder and artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton Virgil Abloh and now the much sought-after 15-piece home collection named “Markerad” is finally available. It was released in certain Ikea stores at the beginning of November and launches in Germany today.

Together with Henrik Most, creative leader at Ikea, Abloh researched the lives of young adults extensively to get to the bottom of their needs when they move from home and live alone for the first time. The collection was born out of these considerations. "I want every product to give people a sense of pride, and I want great design to be the most important reason to buy a product,” the designer said.

In several workshops at the Ikea Design Centre in Älmhult (Sweden), Abloh and Most designed sketches and prototypes and designed the products themselves in the model workshop.

The collection uses classic minimalist designs and builds on them with the artistic allusions and deconstructive elements typical of his work. His quotation marks, which have become cult, can be found throughout the collection.

About his cooperation with Ikea Abloh said: “It was the hardest design project I've ever done. There are few opportunities in a design career to work with the absolute best, and my design concept is consistent with Ikea's democratic design principles–the idea that great design can be affordable for the many.”

As is the case with many "celebrity cooperations,” the hype is also pre-programmed for this collection. In London, customers have already queued up in front of the Wembley Ikea store. So that everyone has the chance to get something out of the much coveted items, Ikea limits the number of products per customer to one piece per product, purchase and day.
