Grammy Award winning DJ and music producer Steve Aoki and Alberto Candiani, an expert denim insider and owner of Candiani Denim, have launched their first collaboration, Dim Mak x Candiani EC-01, a new forward-thinking limited edition jean. The jean is completely made in Los Angeles with Regen, eco-friendly denim by Candiani Denim, then washed and hand painted by Aoki and his Dim Mak artisans, the EC-01. Each pair will be sold at US$150 on the DimMakCollection website and the Dim Mak app.
Aoki explained to SI why this project is so important for him.
Why did you do this capsule collection in collaboration with Candiani Denim?
Alberto and I have been friends and collaborators for over ten years. When Alberto showed me these incredible new innovations, I realized that we definitely had to collaborate on some product together and so the EC-01 concept was born. In terms of science and sustainability, there is no one more advanced than Candiani.
I love learning about processes and this was no different. It was an incredible experience to walk through the Candiani facilities in Italy to see firsthand what goes into a perfect pair of jeans, but to also understand what the challenges are. Being able to use that and create the EC-01, combining the Candiani technology with Dim Mak aesthetics was a dream come true.
Moreover, in the case of this collaboration, I appreciated how sustainable these pieces are as we reduced water usage by 88% (21 liters of water instead of the traditionally used 170 liters) and chemical usage by 80% (from 0.8 kilos to 0.2 kilos) when washing the jeans. Also the fabric we chose was made without using any fresh cotton as it is made of 50% recycled cotton and 50% Tencel’s Refibra fiber saving 2,565 liters of water. Even the indigo dyes are a special technology that only requires a fraction of water and energy conventionally used to wash the indigo to achieve contrasts and designs.
We are taking this collaboration one step at a time, so we shall see!
What is your favorite piece of clothing?
It changes upon the season, but I'm all about a good hoodie. When it comes to denim, I usually grab some recent hand painted jeans from my Aoki 1of1 series.
Dim Mak is all about having a good time, not taking yourself too seriously, fun collaborations and a lot of personality.
How do you see and how are you living at the present?
With all that's been happening around the world, I am finding new ways to connect with my fans to bring lightness and positivity to their day. I also get to spend quality time with my family and take a bit of time to reflect and recharge.
How will music evolve after Covid-19?
Virtual performances are the new normal until we figure out safety protocols for gatherings.
