Bluer Than Indigo opened a store in Portland, Oregon. The boutique, located within a 100 year old building at 1609 NE Alberta Street, offers a mix of women’s and men’s products including “house brands” Agave and Bluer, recycled Levi's, heritage brands, vintage classics all hand-selected by owner and Creative Director Jeff Shafer and his team of designers.
The store was designed “in house” and features Douglas Fir wood floors made from repurposed Pacific Northwest barns, custom fixtures hand-crafted in welded steel and repurposed wood by Portland’s Marie-Claude “MC” Lemay and Allie Rivenbark. Indigo dyed window coverings “hand dipped” in France by vegetable dye artist Betty deParis complete the stores namesake theme.
At Bluer Than Indigo customers are encouraged to exchange an unwanted pair of jeans in return for a $10 credit towards the purchase of any new pair. All collected jeans are then donated to local homeless shelters or recycled into home insulation depending on condition. According to Shafer, “Selling vintage classics and buying back unwanted jeans from customers to give to homeless shelters brings the cycle full circle.”
Shafer’s BLUER brand is Made-in-USA premium denim, which debuted in 2013. BLUER currently sells its impeccably tailored men’s and women’s jeans and denim products at “direct to consumer” prices exclusively online.
AGAVE was founded in 2003 by Shafer as men’s premium denim based on Japanese denim jeans and cotton knitwear, all handcrafted in California. The brand is sold in over 500 stores in North America including Nordstrom, Wingtip, Mitchells, Richards, Wilkes Bashford, E. Street Denim and Gary’s within the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and online.
