Sometimes it starts with small things: Dorlet has introduced a new kind of button for jeans that is meant to be easily removed, reused and customized.

With the “Diabolo” line the French metal trim maker wants to do its bit for a circular economy: while the full recycling of a pair of jeans usually is difficult since metal parts such as rivets and buttons remain on the item, Dorlet developed a design that allows the customer to remove the buttons of end-of-life jeans so that this button doesn’t deter recycling of the garment.

On top, it offers customization of jeans by changing the whole button with another one. Customers can thus reuse this button endlessly but also change its color, shape and material.

The Diabolo line comes in two technologies: Wild and Raw. According to Dorlet, the Wild technology eliminates the very polluting conventional process of traditional plating, thus saving 50% of water, 60% of electricity and 80% of chemicals.

Its Raw
technology is meant to be even more eco-efficient as it shall completely eliminate the use of chemical for coloring while enhancing the "raw" color of the metal that eases recycling.

"For Dorlet, the only way to bring real sustainable innovation to our market is to take into account the recycling of clothing from the design stage of a button but also its environmental impact during production," says Thibault Greuzat, CEO, Dorlet. “We have the possibility of moving from the traditional extract-consume-waste linear model to a circular model in which the products are designed to be easy to remove and the materials to be reused as resources and no longer thrown away as waste.“
